A recording of the CETLSS workshop.
Abstract:
Ungrading is an approach to assessment that decenters the act of assigning letter or number grades to student work. In fact, many ungraders don't put grades on student work at all and rely primarily or exclusively on providing feedback on student work. When it comes to the end of the course, many ungraders engage in a live or written discussion with each student about the appropriate grade to assign to their body of work, coming to a consensus about the final grade to submit. And no, not everyone gets an "A" in an ungraded class!
In this session, you'll learn:
- why some instructors are getting rid of grades
- what ungrading looks like in undergraduate and graduate courses
- some preliminary research findings regarding student and instructor outcomes in ungraded courses
